Do You Like Free Books?

Don't lie to me. It's far more fun to NOT pay for something than it is to pay for it.

So, that's why I have not one, but THREE books free for you to download. Wait, no, make that four - Sew, it's a Quest is permanently free, after all. These other three, however, are free today and tomorrow only.

(And Sew, It's a Quest if you're interested in that)
(Oh, and you can always pick up the Tales of Ever After Anthology)

You may be wondering WHY I'm offering these books for free.
Well, first off, they were all three getting close to their turnovers, and it's been a while since I last offered free books, so I thought - why not? I just released a book, after all, and this could generate some buzz and push some sales.

But the big thing - I'm trying to gather a few more reviews on each of these books.

I have goals, actually, and rewards that I'm going to shower on the internet once they're met.

Honor's the easiest. I just need five reviews (on either Amazon or Goodreads), and I'm going to reveal the cover for book 6 of the series once I hit that. And it's a gorgeous cover, so you guys will want to see it.

WPFP, for its part, I'm trying to bump up to the all-important 50 reviews on Amazon. It's been hovering 39 for the last couple weeks, but I want to push it over the edge. To celebrate when that happens, I'll be posting the first chapter of Love and Memory, the third book of the series, which returns to Clara and Andrew's story, here to this blog.

Worth is probably the most difficult. My goal is 25 Amazon reviews on this one, but it's only at 9 at the moment (was at ten yesterday, though. Don't know what happened.) When it gets there, I'll will post a very special bonus story to the AA blog about a certain couple that was hinted at the end of the book.

And, while we're at it, I would LOVE to see Sew reach 50 Amazon reviews as well. Bit of a long shot on this one, as it's been sitting at 18 reviews for the longest time, and it needs a bit more love. Still trying to decide what I'm going to do with this one, but we'll see!

Another thing I'd like to see? At least one of these books hit a #1 free in some category. I'm not picky which one, just please download the books and share to your friends when your done. Who knows? We might actually succeed.

And, yes, you can totally steal these images for sharing purposes. Just as long as you're sharing and downloading, and reviewing. I really want to share the surprise bonus features with all of you!

Honor is Ouuuuuut.

Okay, so it released nearly two months ago. I managed to let myself slip into a depression and I let failing sales make me doubt the power of this book's message.

But it is out, and it is not too late for me to keep promoting the story.

And I need to announce the winner of the giveaway. I drew it a week ago, but I've been sitting on the information. Anywho.

The winner of a full set of The Bookania Quests is:

*drumroll please!*

SARAH TALEWEAVER.
(To the surprise of nobody. She had more entries than the rest of you put together.)

BUT, here's the deal. There was a file error in the box of books that I ordered. A white page materialized where it shouldn't have been, and it pushed all of the chapters onto the wrong page from there out. I'm in the process of fixing this, but I have ten copies of the book with this goof-up. Sarah, I'm going to leave it up to you whether you want one of these copies or if you want to wait for me to fix a clean copy for you. (Also, I'm going to need you to email me your address.)

As for the rest (Or most of the rest, I'm keeping one as my own personal copy), I'm going to be giving EVERY one of these away as influencer copies. They will be clearly marked as not for resale on this inside, but they will also be signed. To ask for a copy, I will need you to email me at kendraeardnek(at)gmail(dot)com with your address and links to your instagram/youtube/whatever visual medium you have to share the book + what sites you will be able to review the book on. Also tell if you have read the previous books of the series/if you own previous books in the series/if you own any other books of mine/just how excited you are for this book.
(Note, this offer is U.S. only. Sorry, but I can't afford international shipping.)

I also have review ebooks to give out - your choice of file type: PDF, mobi, epub, so if you don't have an influencer account, you can still get a copy of the book. Again, email me with your file preference with what sites you will be able to review the book on and if you have read the previous books of the series/any other books of mine/just how excited you are for this book.

For the record, there is a series sum-up at the front of this book, and I wrote it as a start to a new story arc, so even if you have not read the previous books, you should be able to enjoy this story.

Thanks so much everyone and please do keep sharing the news about this book.

Interfiction Gazette Interview with Maid Marian

Hey all! Popping in with my participation with Jenelle's February is Fantasy Month party!
Normally, she hosts these Interfiction Gazette Interviews on her own blog, but since things are going so crazy over there, I'm posting it here for her instead.

(Illustration from Paul Chesswick's "The Adventures of Robin Hood," my favorite version of Robin Hood.)

Over to Jenelle!

As I stare about the forest, I almost miss spotting the character I was sent to interview, her forest green clothing blending so well with her surroundings. Thankfully, I was told what to look for. I wave, feeling slightly out of place in my jeans and t-shirt, but I didn't have time to change before this assignment. "Maid Marian? Hi, I'm Jenelle with the InterFiction Gazette? Can I ask you a few questions?"

Maid Marian looks up from the arrow she has drawn and breaks into a broad grin. "Greetings," she says, in a vaguely British accent. "What would you like to know?"

I grin at her, happy that she seems open to chatting. "I was hoping you could tell me a little bit about this forest and why you're here?"

"This is Skewwood, formerly Sherwood, and it used to be a regular forest until magic returned. Now it's downright strange." Maid Marian shook her head. "And I'm here because this is my home."

I jot down her answer and then give her a curious look. "The magic returned? Can you explain that a little more? And can you tell my readers a little bit about yourself, as well?"

"Our land is magical, but for the last hundred years, most of the magic was locked in a few very large enchantments," Maid Marian explained. "However, those enchantments are now broken, so the magic is free to do whatever it used to do, such as make this forest strange. As for myself, I am the wife of Robin Hood, leader of the Merry Men, thorn in Prince John's side. There was a time when I walked in other circles, but those days are behind me, and I have carved a new identity for myself."

"Thank you for explaining all that. Can you tell me about this new identity you have carved for yourself? And... if I may... what is it like being married to the notorious Robin Hood?"

"My new identity is that of the notorious Maid Marian," Maid Marian answered. "And being married to Rob? I can't say that it's terribly different than being married to any man, save for our chosen lifestyle and how he generally allows me to do as I please."

I grin at her. "Sounds adventurous." I decide to change tack on her. "Is there anything you wish were different about your life?"

Maid Marian sobers as she considers. "I would have liked to have known my mother," she answered. "I might not have been so scared of being a woman, had she been there to guide me through it."

"I'm sorry to hear that," I reply sincerely. "So... you are friends with another Robin, right? Princess Robin of Locksley? Have you heard from her lately? I was wondering if you could tell me what she and her brother are up to these days?"

"Aye, that I am," Maid Marian agreed. "Robin's a dear thing, always has been - my only regret when I ran from my old life was leaving her behind. But now that she's grown, she found me again. I'm quite proud of the woman she's become, even if her own mother will never quite know what to make of her - ah, dear Charlotte. Robin's currently here at camp, along with her little girl, Maryanne, who they deny naming after me, and her husband is with mine, investigating some rumors. As for Robert, I hear that he's settling into life as crown prince of Locksley."

I write furiously, jotting down notes, then look up. "Thank you! Just a few more questions: Can you tell me about this camp? And I'd love to hear more about those rumors Eric and Robin Hood are investigating."

"I'm afraid that I can't tell you the location of camp - my husband is very strict about keeping that a secret - but I can tell you that it's quite a civilized little village these days," Maid Marian answered. "Though I can't say that it was true before Ellen and I got there. As for the rumors - it's just a routine check, nothing interesting. Some scouts say that they saw some men prowling a little too close to camp for Robin Hood's liking, and so he wanted to see what that was about. Most likely nothing, once all is said and done."

Her frown belied her carefree tone, however.

"Hmm..." I eye her for a moment, wondering if I should press this any further, but then I grow aware of a faint vibration coming from my badge. "One final question," I blurt out in a rush, "if you could ask the Author one question what would you ask?"

Maid Marian tilted her head to the side, fidgeting with her bow as she considered. "You know, in my youth, I had a lot of questions for Him. Why hadn't my mother survived my birth? Why couldn't I have been born a boy? Why did only boys get to learn all of the interesting things, and what gave them the right to be all insufferable about it? Then, later, why did my father have to die? Why did his brother cast me aside as a troublesome nuisance, forcing me to serve as a companion to a pansy of a princess? Why did he think that he had a right to marry me off to the awfullest man I ever knew, forcing me flee to seek sanctuary from the last man on earth I wanted to be indebted to .... but," here she gave a small smile. "I'm older now, and I can look back and see things more clearly than I ever could, then. Right now, I don't have questions - just faith."

Her response warms me to the core and I give her a smile and try out a curtsy... it... doesn't go super well, but she is gracious enough to pretend not to notice. Or maybe she really doesn't... she seems distracted suddenly. "Well, thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. I, for one, can't wait to hear more about your adventures!"

Honor: A First Chapter

Hey there! Decided that I'd pop in with the first chapter of Honor: A Quest In, for all of you to enjoy. I shared it a couple months back in a newsletter, but now you lovely readers of my blog can enjoy it.

(Also, for those of you who haven't read the previous books, the spoilers in this first chapter are minimal, so feel free to read ahead and enjoy.)

And if you missed it - I'm running a giveaway, so snatch up your chance to win a set of all four Bookanias in paperback! (You can start by commenting on this post.)

1 – Wherein a Routine Mission Doesn’t Go as Planned

Once upon a time, in a land called Bookania, there lived a young boy who was the son of Robin Hood himself. As a result, he lived in the heart of Skewwood with the band of Merry Men.
  The young boy was quite proud of this fact, especially since, unlike his younger brother and sisters, who were all babies – or practically babies at any rate – he had his own pony, bow, and small sword. Most importantly, he got to go with his father on important missions.
  And so he was doing at the start of my story. Scouts had reported strange men prowling through the woods, and Robin Hood had taken the boy and a few of the men to investigate. However, after three days’ travel with no sight of the strange men, things were starting to get a bit dull. Did they even exist?
  “There’s something up ahead,” Prince Eric suddenly announced.
  The young boy wasn’t actually sure if Prince Eric was officially one of his father’s men. He knew that the man’s wife was – or was at least pretty sure that she was, but he wasn’t so sure about Eric. Nevertheless, his father did trust the man with the top-secret location of the camp and on incredibly important missions like this one.
  “What is it?” Robin Hood asked.
  “I’m not sure,” Prince Eric admitted, tilting his head to the side even as his hand went to his sword’s hilt. “It might be nothing, but—”
  He was cut off by a scream, and the moment after that, a giant dog burst out of the woods, dragging woman by the arm.
  Prince Eric drew his sword and spurred his horse to follow after the dog, which turned and darted back into the woods.
  The rest of the men rushed after him. The young boy was last of all, hesitating after a stern glance from his father. He caught up with the men just in time to see a net fall over Prince Eric and scary-looking men pour out of the woods and attack the rest of the men.
  The boy drew his own sword but held back from rushing into the fray. His was but a very small blade, and it didn’t look like his father’s men were faring very well. What good could he do? He’d probably just get himself killed, and his mother would be very cross with him if that happened. She hadn’t wanted him to go with the men, yet, after all.
  And then was all over. Before the boy had a chance to pull together his courage and decide what to do, the scary men had disarmed and subdued all of his father’s men – had them all tied up with rope and everything!
  “You there, boy, are you with these men? Or did you just happen by and think that a skirmish is something nice to gawk at?”
  The boy’s eyes widened as one of the scary men noticed him. He opened his mouth but found he couldn’t speak.
  “Come now,” said the man. “We’ve no reason to harm a mere boy such as yourself, even if you might be tangled up with these desperate ruffians. Indeed, if you’d like, we can take you back with us. I’m sure that Prince John would be happy to provide opportunities for your betterment.”
  Prince John? This was growing worse by the moment.
  The boy leaned back. “I – I need to get back to my mother.”
  The man gave a single, barking laugh. “Do you now? Aye, that would be a fine idea. Yes, stay home with your mother and don’t get tangled up with criminals bent on defying the crown.”
  The boy sat up straight. “Prince John isn’t king yet. King Richard will return one day, just you wait and see.”
  The man laughed. “But who knows if Richard is even still alive? Prince John will be crowned king quick enough. And, for that insolence…” He strode towards the boy, pulled him from his pony’s back, and threw him roughly to the ground. “This is too fine a beast to belong to a peasant who refuses to give respect to his betters. Now, run home to your mother and perhaps she’ll teach you some manners.”
  The boy swallowed hard, hastily picked himself up off the ground, and ran. He cast one glance over his shoulder at his father to see him give a small, yet reassuring smile. Then he gave a glance to his pony only to see that the man had thrown the “girl” across its back.
  She’d been a mere doll. All this trouble for a doll.
]
  He had to return to camp and let his mother know of the attack. She’d know what to do. She’d be able to fix this.
  But he was three days from camp, and that was on horseback. It’d take forever on foot – if he even made it back at all. Skewwood was dangerous, and he was alone with only a bow and a small sword to defend himself. He didn’t even have any food on him. Would he starve?
  Night was descending. The boy could hear the howling of wolves. He didn’t want to be alone out here.
  “I wish … I wish that there was a way for me to get home quicker,” he said aloud, stopping to lean against a tree. “I wish I had someone with me.”
  He stood there a moment more, closing his eyes and trying hard not to cry. He was a big boy, and he had the very important task of making sure that his mother knew what had happened. His father and all the men were counting on him.
  “William Hood, I have need of a brave knight to guard me in these woods.”
  The boy started at his name, and he turned to see a woman riding a horse. She was very, very white, and the horse was very, very black.
  “You … know my name?” he asked, drawing back in alarm. “Who are you?”
  “A maiden in need of a brave knight,” she answered, “and in possession of a horse that is sure and swift. You, young William, are a valiant young man in possession of a message that must be delivered with all haste. I think that we can help each other, won’t you agree?”
  William shifted from one foot to the other. Her offer of a horse was tempting, very tempting, but his father had a very strict policy against strangers in the camp, unless they were blindfolded and well-guarded … and this woman was very strange indeed, white as she was and especially since she had as yet to actually look at William.
  “I already know the location of your Father’s camp,” the woman continued, running her hand through the horse’s mane. “Three hundred years ago, it was where—” She broke off with a shake of her head. “I know everything that happens in this forest. I hear every wish.”
  “Are – are you a fairy?” William asked. He didn’t know much about fairies, except that Prince Eric said that they could generally be trusted and that sometimes his wife would rant about them being meddlesome.
  The woman shook her head again. “I am not a fairy, no, not in the slightest. Still, I can help you, and you can help me.”
  William narrowed his eyes. Prince Eric had also warned him that if magical people wanted to barter their services, he should immediately run the other direction because they never meant well. “What do you want of me?” he asked.
  “As I said, I need you to be my brave knight in these woods, and that is all,” she answered. “Once I deliver you to your mother, you need never concern yourself about me again.”
  William considered, and he finally nodded. After all, he didn’t want to be alone in these woods and a horse would speed his message greately. “You won’t tell anyone where my father’s camp is, will you?”
  “I have no motive to betray you and every reason to keep your confidence,” she answered. She gave a small smile. “Well, shall we be off, young William?”
  He nodded, and in a blink, she had lifted him onto her horse’s back, taken her seat behind him, and prompted the steed into motion.
  William meant to stay awake, but it had been a long day, and his eyelids were heavy. He closed them, for a mere moment, he thought, but when he opened them again, they stood still, and light shone through the trees above him.
  “We have arrived,” the woman announced. “Just beyond these trees, you’ll find your cousin Scarlett, whom your mother set to keep watch.”
  “But…” William was still trying to blink away sleep. “We were three days from camp. How can we be here already?”
  “My horse is swift, as I told you,” said the woman, giving a quiet laugh. “Come now, William. Your mother needs the message you carry. I have bought you precious time. Don’t waste it.”
  With her help, William slid down from the horse’s back, still wobbly with sleep. He frowned up at the white woman. “You never did tell me your name.”
  Her lip curled in a sad smile, even as she stared straight ahead. “No, I did not.”
  “What is it?” he asked. “I think my mother would like to know.”
  But the woman just shook her head. “My name has not been spoken in three centuries. Your mother need only know that I bear no ill intention and that I saw you safely home. She also needs to know what happened yesterday.”
  William knew this, and yet he still couldn’t bear to let her leave. “Does your horse have a name?”
  She gave another quiet laugh. “He is my Shadow.”
  William nodded. “That’s a good name. He looks like a shadow.”
  There was her smile. “Farewell, young William, and may you never need my aid again.”
  And, with a blur, she and her horse were gone. The moment after that, William realized that he couldn’t remember what she’d looked like, beyond how she was so very, very white, and her horse so very, very black.

  He sighed and turned to the trees.

Honor: A Book Release

It's been four years (well, ish, there was the rerelease of Kingdom containing book 3.5), but I'm excited to finally announce the next official release in the Bookania Quests.

Honor: A Quest In, hitting the shelves of your nearest Amazon this February 26th. And if you think that soon, I quite agree. Please ignore the noise of me screaming over here.

So, you may be expecting me to be announcing the sign-up for the blog tour. I mean, I'm the queen of the blog tour - don't even breath without setting one up, but...

I decided to do things a bit differently this go-round. See, I've given myself a very tight time-crunch for this release, and I've not found blog tours to be strictly successful with Bookania in the past.

Instead, starting now, I'm running a promotion party/giveaway here on my blog, to be culminated on February 26th, the day of the release, and the winner will be announced March 1st(ish.)

And the winner? Oh, they'll just be receiving a stack of all four Bookania Quests in the mail. Autographed copies, if they're in the U.S. (Yes, I'm opening this up international. Not sure at the moment how to do international shipping, but if someone international wins the stack, I will figure it out, I promise.)

But if you already have the previous three books in paperback? I'll let you substitute them out for WPFP+LDTD or The Seven Drawers+The Ankulen+The Worth of a King. Or you can wait until August, when I plan to realease Hair We Go Again. Sound good?

So, how are you going to earn entries to win this lovely stack of books? I'm thrilled that you asked.

First off, and a no brainer on this one - SHARE THE NEWS. Make sure that you're following me on Twitter and Facebook, and whenever I post something on either site, share/retweet it. You can create your own posts as well - sharing either the preorder link or this blog post. Make sure that you are tagging me (@Kendraeardnek on Twitter, or just mention Kendra E. Ardnek on Facebook) so that I get notified of your post. Each share is one entry.

POST THE COVER TO INSTAGRAM. You can grab any of the pics that I've put in this post (just click them to get them at full size, and then download them), or you can do something of your own using photoshop. Just have fun with this one, and make sure that you use the hashtag #honoraquestin so that I can find it. Conversely, you can also share your excitement by dressing up as any of the characters. Any picture posted - and you can do this up to once per day - is three points.

BLOG POSTS. As I said, I'm not doing a blog tour, but I would love to see you blog about my latest release! I have three blog types that I will accept:
~Robin Hood Shoutouts - Basically, review any Robin Hood-themed book or movie that you have read/seen and loved (Except the Disney one - I saw that about thirty times too many a few years back, and I DO NOT want the songs stuck in my head again. I just got them out.) Make sure that you have it clear in your post that it is for promotion of Honor: A Quest In. This can be done as many times as you would like.
~Fill out the tag that I will be posting in a few days
~Interview any of the Bookania cast - just send me an email with questions for your character of choice, and I will shoot you back the answers for you to post on the day of release, Feb 26th.
Any blog post is worth three points. Make sure you email me a link to your post as soon as it goes up, and I will be sharing the posts in a master list during the party.

REVIEWS. Existing reviews count - as long as it's for one of the Bookania Quests, including the two short stories. The initial review is worth 3 points, and any subsequent postings of it is worth another point (ie, if a review is on a blog AND Goodreads.) Let me know that the review was for the NEW editions (ie, the edited stories with their shiny covers), and that's worth yet another point.

My email: kendraeardnek (at) gmail (dot) com.

LEAVE A COMMENT. Be it here on my blog, on my Facebook, on Instagram, YouTube, respond to my tweets - just as long as the post mentions Honor in some form or fashion. This DOES apply to back posts, so if you want to click on the "Honor A Quest In" tag on my blog, go through, and comment on EVERY single post - all the power to you. One point per comment.

Bring me a baby...  Okay, that one's unrealistic, but I've been in a serious need of a baby fix, so if you haaaaaappen to have a squishy little one, and can manage to get to my area, well ... we can work out a deal???? (HEY, THIS IS RELEVANT. THERE'S A BABY IN HONOR.) (Three babies, actually) (Why is it that all of the babies in my life grew up and no one nearby has had any in forever? I mean, people that I feel confident enough to steal ask to hold their offspring?) (aaaaaaaanywho)

INTERACT IN THE GOODREADS GROUP. That thing is deaaaad. So go revive it, and any comment you leave in any of the topics (provided that it is at least 30% on topic), is worth a point.

MAKE SURE THAT HONOR IS ON YOUR GOODREADS TO-READ LIST. Just email me with the link to the shelf listing, and it's a point. While you're at it, add Hair as well, and I'll give you another TWO points. (Oh, and yes, you can Instagram Hair's cover as well, I'm not going to stop you. Yes, I know it's gorgeous.)

My email: kendraeardnek (at) gmail (dot) com.

PIN TO THE GROUP BOARD. Not a member of the group board? Just let me know that you want in, and I'll get you in so you can pin away. Each pin is a point.

PREORDER THE BOOK. Finally, but most importantly, run over to your nearest amazon and preorder a kindle copy. Then you can sit tight and wait for it to appear in your inbox. Email me the receipt, and I'll give you TEN WHOLE POINTS towards the giveaway. It's gonna be awesome.

My email: kendraeardnek (at) gmail (dot) com.

My notebook is open and ready to receive the tallymarks to represent your points. I can't wait to see who wins.

More posts are to come, including one with the tag and a chance for a review ARC, so hold on to your hats!

Know The Novel: Planning some Hair

So the majestic Cait and Skye aren't doing the Beautiful Books NaNo link-up anymore, but never fear! Christine over at Musings of an Elf is here to come to our aid. With Know the Novel. Another awesome link-up where we get to talk about our books! And I love talking about my books, so yay!!!

(Also, I need to get myself back into the blogging game. This year has just been all-around crazy, though.)

Anywho, for NaNo this year, I'll be writing book 5 of everyone's favorite Bookania Quests. And also finishing book 4, Honor: A Quest In, because it's not done like I wanted it to be. Just eight chapters left on that one, though.

So, questions.

1. What first sparked the idea for this novel?
Just following the writing of Sew, I wanted to know what happened next ... and the title "Hair We Go Again" came to me, I knew Lukas was going to show up, and I've muddled around with about twelve different plots for it in the days that have followed.

2. Share a blurb!
What I have on NaNo is "Robin and Eric agree to help Dick and Theo recover their old castle, lost in the hundred-year sleep." All the more that I'm going to say is that Rapunzel and jackalopes are involved.

3. Where does the story take place? What are some of your favorite aspects about the setting?
It takes place in Bookania, predominately in Winthrop, though we will be heading into Skewwood for a bit as that seems to be a staple of the series.

4. Tell us about your protagonist.
You know, that would involve me knowing who the precise protagonist is, and I don't actually know that yet, since I still have to write the book. Is it Robin? Is it Eric? Is it Lukas? Is it Meg? Is it Rapunzel? I know they're all going to have POV, but I DON'T KNOW WHICH ONE HAS THE STAGE YET.

(Also, I'd like to state that the "Hair" in the title is as much a reference to Meg's role in the book as it is Rapunzel's)

5. Who (or what) is the antagonist?
Human nature. And maybe King William's grumpiness.

6. What excites you the most about this novel?
Several scenes between Eric, Robin, and/or Lukas, some scenes involving Maryanne, and then a proposal scene involving Meg.

7. Is this going to be a series? Standalone? Something else?
I think I answered this in the introduction.

8. Are you plotting? Pantsing? Plansting?
Plansting, as always. I do need to sit down and write up a table of contents, but so far all I have is:
1. Wherein a Princess Prefers Adventures to Naps
2. Wherein Finding Old Castles are More Practical Than Jackalopes.

9. Name a few things that make this story unique.
It's a tale of what happens when the happily ever after seems to be going wrong. It also involves a precocious 18-month-old Maryanne who is intent on finding a jackalope. And maybe fishing a new best friend out from under a table.

10. Share a fun “extra” of the story (a song or full playlist, some aesthetics, a collage, a Pinterest board, a map you’ve made, a special theme you’re going to incorporate, ANYTHING you want to share!).

The Mothers in my Writing

Happy mother's day! Everyone, do me a favor and go give your mother a huge hug for me. Kay? Kay. And your Grandmothers, too, if you can manage it. I lost my Grandmother on mother's day, nine years ago.

But, sad stuff aside, let's talk about fictional mothers. Particularly the mother's in my own writing. (I'll feature the mothers in my favorite books by other people next year, kay?) It seems to be a trend in fiction, especially in fantasy, to kill off the mothers, but I like to rebel against that. Mothers are awesome people, see. And the good ones know to let their children go off and adventure. I've killed off a few, but, for the most part, they're all alive and kicking.

So, yeah, let's get started. In no particular order and with no number cap.

Isa: Let's start off with Clara's mom in Water Princess, Fire Prince. You only see her in one scene at the end of the book, but she's such a core part of Clara's character that I can't help but mention her (especially as she plays a much larger role in Love and Memory. I need to finish writing that.). She's a woman who wanted a large family, but due to an accident in her teens, ends up with only Clara - and ten miscarriages. She's a woman based on my mother and paternal grandmother, and, oh, she hurts my heart so much.

Maid Marian: Let's hop over to Bookania now to talk about this lovely lady. While she is a mother in her own right, where she shines is in her mentor relationship with Robin. See, she does see Robin as her daughter (for spoiler reasons). And Robin very much benefits from a positive relationship with an older woman.

Andrew: Wait, what? A guy? Why am I putting a guy on a list of mothers??? Okay, hush. I'm just saying that this fellow deserves an honorable mention for stepping up after he lost his mother in a car accident (see, I DO have a few maternal casualties), and was mom to his three younger brothers. At twelve. Poor boy.

Petra: Oh, you guys haven't really read her as a mother, but let me just say, the mother-daughter relationship that develops between her and Laura is beautiful. And she does have children of her own, and she's a wonderful mother to them, too.

Robin: Again, you guys haven't read her as a mother yet but readers of the revised Do You Take This Quest? know that she has adopted a whole orphanage of children (her new husband ran the place), and readers of My Kingdom for a Quest know that their own is on the way. And, let me just say, motherhood looks very good on Robin. Really mellows her out and gives her a direction in life.

Erika: Aka, the Eternal Queen. I haven't finished writing this book - I've barely started writing it, but her relationship with her granddaughter has been fun thus far, especially since she's physically younger than her granddaughter (due to the cyclical nature of her life). And I'm very much looking forward to writing the resolution of her relationship with her own mother.

Rintaya: This is a woman whose baseline of her personality is "mother." She's Ashna's stepmother in Lady Dragon, Tela Du, and Ashna really scores with her stepmother. A very kind, understanding woman ... who may or may not be hiding some pretty interesting secrets.

Emily: Aka, Jen's mom in The Ankulen. I don't know if I've ever mentioned her by name before. But she's a dear lady, who, like Isa, wanted a large family but only ended up with just one daughter. She chose the route of adoption, though that ... turned out interesting. Oh, but her backstory's sad.

Queen Blanche: Stardrana's mother in Half-Hidden, and another character for whom "mother" is the baseline of her personality. She would sacrifice anything for her children - and has. Ah, but her story's so tragic, and I really can't wait to share it with all of you.

Queen Tailya: One of Jen's imaginary friends in The Ankulen - to whom was given children before a husband. Yeah ... kid logic isn't always the soundest.

Queen Camilla: Eric's mother in Bookania. She was never the prettiest of women, and her husband is ... shallow. So, once she'd provided him with his heir and spare, was pretty much left alone. Pretty much the source of most of the good parts of Eric's character. Such a dear woman.

And ... there's my list. There are some others that I have in my WIP's who I didn't mention, including several who are negative influences (Queen Charlotte, Queen Adelaide), but I'm going to stop here. This is a good list.

December's Here

Can't believe that the year has gone already ... and yet my brain already thinks that it's 2018. Silly brain. I am looking forward to 2018. There's going to be a lot of awesomeness happening. And I achieved a lot of what I set out to do here in 2017. (I mean, except for writing Love and Memory, but I made good progress with that one, and I'll let it be.) I think, for the first time in a long time, I'm actually ready for the new year.

Almost, but not quite - as I do have four December goals on the writing end:

1. Finish the last four chapters and the epilogue of The Worth of a King (And decide if I need to change the title. Granite and I have had a talk, and if chapter 19 of part 3 goes right, I won't need to, but ... we'll see how it goes. I really don't want to change the title, as I love it so much, but I'm very worried about it not fitting the book's plot.)

2. Write four or five chapters of Honor: A Quest In. I restarted this book on the first, in a notebook this time, and I'm almost done with the first chapter. I really like how it's going. I also have a table of contents already written, so I know where this story is going. I'd like to have this book finished by May of next year, and have it released in late winter/early spring of 2019.

3. Edit and submit The Seven Drawers to the Rooglewood Contest. I've already sent in my submission form. I just need to shiny the book up and make it irresistible. Winning this contest would be AMAZING for my writing career, especially since I'm already established as a Fairy Tale author, and this will likely bring love back to my Bookanias (and those babies are in desperate need of Love.)

4. Have sign-up ready and the writing contest opened for Indie e-Con 2018. YES, FOLKS, INDIE E-CON 2018 IS COMING. Due to popular demand, I've moved it a bit further into the year, though - May 21st - 26th. My current scheme is to have the sign-up and contest opened by the 15th of this month, so stay tuned on the GiraffeCrafts Blog.

But I also told my boss that I'm willing work four days a week instead of three as is my usual, during the duration of December, so let's see how I survive that. (Haha, I'll survive. And I'll have a wee bit more money.)

And then we have Christmas and I am very much NOT ready for that. I mean, as we stand at the moment, the only presents I have bought is some books for V, and then I'm going to upgrade to the Family Plan for MS Word and call that my Christmas present for my family. (I mean, it's only $50 more to have five people on my plan, so ... really no point in not upgrading.)

But I think I'm going to try to clean up my room today, pull out my personal tree, and get it decorated. Maybe then I'll be a bit more hohoho.

Oh, enjoy some NaNo Snippets:

  "Silver and Gold..." he repeated, as he finally realized who this was. There was only one person who referred to the Immortal King and Queen by those names, or at least, that's what Granite claimed.
Laura, the Doorkeeper, who had been like a mother to them. The girl who walked between worlds with the same ease as a person walked from his bedroom to the kitchen.
  Somehow, he'd never expected her to seem so young.
  "Oh, yes, Amber and Granite, that's what you call them, the dear ones," said Laura, nodding firmly.    "So, shall we go surprise them? I don't imagine that you'll be the best of surprises for them, Delaney, because your presence here means that Ossian tried to make you take that scale and..." She shuddered. "Those scales are terrible things, you must understand. I don't like them, not one bit. They cause nothing but pain and sadness, and if we could just destroy them all right now, the world would be a much happier place. Except that we can't, because so many of them are still stuck to dragons, and to destroy their scales would hurt the dragons, and we can't have that happening, now can we?"
  Delaney blinked again. Honestly, this girl made Nadilynn seem like she slowly and carefully considered her every word. "The dragons..."
  "They have souls just like you and me, even if they are corrupt, they're not beyond hope of redemption," Laura explained, as she led Delaney into the castle. "No one's beyond hope of redemption, not until they're dead. Keep that in mind, Delaney."
  Delaney frowned. "Oh, okay."

  "But," and her voice turned serious and quiet, "sometimes they won't. Not that they can't, but they won't. No one is beyond redemption, but some reject it until it's too late."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  She broke out of the crowd, ran into the house, and threw herself into her bed, burying her head in the pillows.
  “Nadi, why do you have to be such a stubborn idiot!” she choked out, trying desperately to keep tears at bay. “I told you – I told you! Now you’re going to make things so much harder for everyone, and what do you care? You had your romantic rush of defiance, so you’re happy. But what’s to become of the rest of us?”
  “We’ll figure something out, I’m sure. She did just cost Ossian his alliance with Hollolund. I know that I, for one, wasn’t looking forward to having to fight them, too, to get that throne.”
  Obsidia pried the pillow off of her head to glare at her brother, who stood in her bedroom door.   “Nadi is an idiot!” she repeated.
  “Hush, not too loud, now,” said Adrian stepping out of the doorway and sitting down next to her on the bed. “That would be considered treason if the wrong person heard it. We all know that you grew up with Princess Nadilynn and own the especial right to call her whatever you please, but the people on the streets do not, and they’re currently very interested in your reaction to finding out your future queen.”
  Obsidia swallowed and flopped the pillow back onto her head. “I don’t know what to do with her, Adrian.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  Adrian shrugged in agreement as he followed the Immortal King through the confusing halls of this castle. "So, what's it like, being king?" he asked. "Ruling all of the people?"
  "Well, we don't have so many people who directly follow Amber and me," Granite admitted, tilting his head to the side. "So we don't do as much ruling as you'll be doing. But we do have to go from country to country making sure that all of the rulers are behaving themselves and treating their subjects properly. Personally, at my age, I'd much prefer to be left alone and to let all of the people rule themselves, but they need someone older and wiser to set them straight." He shook his head. "I think being king is less about ruling people than it is setting a good example for them."
  Adrian blinked and slowly nodded. "I guess. I just ... that's still a huge responsibility."
  "It is," the king agreed. "Ah, here we are, at the training hall." He pushed open a door and entered a room with weapons covering every inch of the wall. Adrian entered after him, mouth agape as he stared at all of the weapons represented.
  "I imagine that you already have your knives on your person, as any good Zovordian," said Granite, approaching the wall and removing a pair of knives of his own. "Good weapons, knives."
  "I don't even know what half of these weapons are," Adrian admitted, his eye scanning the room.
  "Well, when you've lived nearly three thousand years, you get bored and start collecting," Granite admitted, shrugging. "And I didn't even do all of the collecting - there was an Immortal King for every Immortal Queen, making me the eleventh of our line, just as Amber is." He grinned a bit. "And while I am among the longest-lived of all of them, none of them were younglings when they died. So, shall we commence?"
  Adrian swallowed and drew his knife. "Sure, I guess."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Laura plopped herself down at the head of the table and gathered up a stack of papers that were already lying there. "Oh, it looks like Silver stayed up far too late last night, working on battle plans. Don't quite understand her fascination with maps, myself, but I suppose, if one has to navigate places in a linear fashion, they do have their uses." She picked up a ceramic globe that lay to the side and cracked it open to reveal the map inside. "It never ceases to amaze me how many different shapes and forms that worlds can take. For instance, most worlds where I visit, we walk around on the outside." She walked her fingers over the smooth outer rim of the globe. But this world - this world is inside. I just love it so much - don't you, too?"
Spring Snippets!
Oh, but it's been forever since I last shared a good snippet post. Sure, yes, I've slipped a snippet in here and there, and I did do the snippet tag, but I haven't had a good ol' snippet post.
Also, some of these snippets are for books that I haven't revealed the titles for yet, so to keep you guys on your toes, I'm not going to tell you what books these are from. They're largely from Rizkaland, but I have a number of my other works tossed in here as well.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  “Were you talking to Andrew again?” Rhoda continued. “Honestly, skipping class to talk to your boyfriend isn’t cool, Clara.”
  Clara shrugged. She couldn’t deny it. “He didn’t have time to talk.”
  “I should think not!” Rhoda cried. “Clara, maybe you don’t realize it, but Andrew has a lot of responsibilities to attend to – not only does he have to take care of his younger brothers, but he also manages his dad’s website and does his own school work on top of that. He can’t spend the whole day talking to you.”
  “Oh, hush,” said Kath. “They’re in love. It’s romantic.”
  “Oh yes, and the met all of two months ago,” Rhoda rolled her eyes again. “Now Clara’s a soppy fool who can’t breathe without calling him and is skipping classes. Hang on.” She paused and narrowed her eyes at Clara. “You’re not…”

She turned away. “Very well. It’s best that I show you, then. Just know that you won’t be able to get out of this. Although we could get a mental to wipe your mind, if we absolutely had to. I’d get punished for carelessness, but oh well.”
“Show me what?” William asked. “Wipe my mind?”
“It’s been done before, in rare circumstances,” Roxanne admitted. “Now don’t freak out. I’m going to take you to see my father. Best to ask his permission and all.”
And before he could say anything, she grabbed his wrist, and plunged them into the mountain. Not in the stone itself, like she usually traveled, but she created a small room, just big enough for the two of them, and moved it through. Didn’t want to overwhelm him too much.
“Rox…”
“Dad’s in his lair, I can feel him,” Roxanne continued, trying to not focus on him. “One moment and here we are. Stay here while I have a word with him.”
She had bumped them into the hallway near where her father was, so she stepped through the wall, leaving William to panic all by himself.

  Laura gave a firm nod and threw the necklace to the ground.
  A bright light lit the night and the parking lot began to quake. The pavement split and from the earth sprang an ethereal woman. Twenty feet tall, and made of pure light. Her eyes were flaming balls of fire.
  "Hello, Mother," Laura said calmly, even as she tightened her grip on her staff.

One afternoon Alia turned from washing her hands to find Tante staring at her from the couch in the corner. Her eyes were wide open.
“Alia,” she called softly.
She approached immediately.
“I’m dying.” Tante's words were soft.
“No!” Alia stopped mid-cry, her lips pinching together tightly. She was not to disturb Tante or cause her to exert herself.

  “It isn't Rizkaland, you know," sobbed Clara. "It's you. We shan't meet you there. And how can we live, never meeting you?"
  "But you shall meet me, dear one," said Alphego.
  "Are -are you there too, Sir?" said Andrew.
  "I am," said Alphego. "But there I have another name. You must learn to know me by that name. This was the very reason why you were brought to Rizkaland, that by knowing me here for a little, you may know me better there.”

Robin shook even as she stared up the length of her sword, stared at the man at the other end. For the first time in ler life, she felt fear in a sword fight.
For the first time, she felt fear as she stared into those gray eyes. Eyes she knew so well.
"Eric," she whispered. "Eric, please."
He just blinked. "Who's Eric?"
And then his sword came crashing towards her.

  Reuben started walking, trusting her to follow. There was a room in her house that … while he wasn’t sure that it would prove that she remembered, he suspected that it could prove that she didn’t, if she didn’t. He hoped that she didn’t.
  It was a strange room. According to Laura, it was technically part of Rizkaland, even though it mostly functioned as though it were part of their own world. It was only visible to people who had been to Rizkaland and though he didn’t quite know how it worked, he suspected that if she had truly forgotten, she might not be able to see it.
  They reached it. He took a deep breath and turned back to face Petra. “Do you see it?”
  Her eyebrow arched. “See what?”
  He took a deep breath. “The door. The green one. The one right behind me.”
  “Reuben … there is no door behind you.”

He held her gaze steadily, trying to impart a feeling of hopefulness over the distance. Obsidia stood, lifting the heavy book from the desk, and crossed the study, taking a seat in the chair beside him. She heaved a big sigh.
“Have you found anything yet?”
Adrian sorrowfully shook his head. “I don’t think this book goes far enough back in our history to know if there’s a way around the tradition. How about you?”
“I’m too bogged down in rules and procedures. I never knew we had so many. The Court doesn’t follow the half of them. I keep hoping there’s something in here that will help, but I find nothing.”

She sounded so pitiful and forlorn. Adrian ached to take her into his arms and hold her tight, assure her that everything would be okay. But more than one thing forbade it.

  “Andrew, we … we need to talk.”
  Andrew turned to see Clara standing in the hall behind him. Her expression was tight. “Yes?”
  She took a deep breath and stepped towards him, taking his hand. “I've not told anyone else yet, but I … I think I’m pregnant.”
  He blinked, drawing back. “You…”
  She closed her eyes, leaning into him. “It’s yours, it has to be yours. I’ve not … you’re the only man I’ve ever…”
  “But I’ve … we’ve not … not since coming back.”
  “I know,” she whispered.

Also, how do you like my new cover for Sew, It's a Quest?
I'll be uploading it later next week. Thought it might need a new face now that it's a new edition.

Characters I'm Looking Forward to Writing About in the Future of Bookania

As you guys may know, I have a good twenty or so books planned for the Bookania Quests, with a slew of random ideas and plot swirling around beyond that point. Of course, while plots and ideas are great, much of what I'm looking forward to writing are the characters. I just thought I'd share with you some of the interesting people whose names you might seen floating around on my pinterest board. These characters are in no particular order.

Maryanne - Ah, you guys were expecting this one, weren't you? Robin and Eric's handful of an eldest daughter. I might have talked about her before. She might have also taken over my blog a few times. I'm excited for the procotious toddler of books 4-6, the adventuring expert of books 10-16, and the older, but wiser woman of books 19 onward, and you really should be too.

Alyson - She won't show up for a long time, though she will be mentioned in book 6, but she's still someone I'm looking forward to finally introducing when the time comes. She's a cross between Buttercup of Princess Bride and Atalanta of Greek mythology, a surprising combination that only I would have thought of. Her backstory is more like Buttercup's, involving the loss of her intended to pirates, but unlike Buttercup, she didn't sit around and mope, but opted to become Sworn instead. I'll explain the Sworn in probably book six, but that's where the Atalanta influence comes in.

Tom Thumb - So far, I only have him signed on for one book, but he'll probably show up again in later volumes as well. Along with Thumbelina. I have an interesting reasoning for the two of them, but I can't tell you much.

Archibald XVII - He's a character I can't tell you much about, and he's only going to be in two books. He's actually from an alternate Bookania, and doesn't exist in the real Bookania.

Sandra Hood - Robin Hood and Maid Marian's youngest daughter. She's a few months older than Maryanne, and is one of Maryanne's Best Friends (Maryanne has a collection of Best Friends, by the way, including, but not limited to: Sandra, Jana, Love, and Spoiler. Well, her name isn't actually Spoiler, but I can't tell you what it really is). Sandra has a fear of wolves.

Love - She's one of Maryanne's cousins and, through no fault of her own, one of Maryanne's Best Friends. I say 'no fault of her own' because she's cursed with a personality opposite her name. Which makes things very interesting. I put her in a roleplay once and she spent almost the whole time in a poke war with a dragon.

Peter - Robin and Eric's son. Peter's a doctor and takes after his Uncle Robert in personality. Unlike Robert, however, he usually can be talked into adventures on the excuse of keeping the people he cares about safe. Such as his sister. Especially his sister. Some days he wonders why he bothers.

Bianca and Brianna - Robin and Eric's twins. They were actually the first children I develloped for the couple, by the way (Followed by Maryanne when I decided I wanted their first child to be a singleton girl, and then finally Peter when I decided I wanted them to have a son), and are based on a riddle.

Ella and Penny - Meg's younger sisters. I'm really looking forward to giving them a proper introduction to the series. Mostly I'm looking forward to the sisterly interplay between them and Meg. And Robin, who, as you guys may remember, adopted Meg as her honorarysister, and since she's going through a lot of the trouble to reunite the siblings, would be terribly upset if they left her out.

Rapunzel - I think most of you have guessed where she belongs in Bookania, though we still have a bit to go before I can introduce her. I have some pretty interesting twists planned for her, mostly involving the properties of the rapunzel plant, and I'm looking forward to writing her interactions with Robin. They're both ENFP's you see, but Robin's a jaded ENFP learning to come out of her shell, while Rapunzel's a naive ENFP who's learning that the world's not a nice place after all. Such fun.

Charlene - Yes, you will get to meet Queen Charlotte's sister - and actually in the near future as it's up for the next book. I'm really looking forward to Robin's ineractions with her energetic aunt ... and meeting a female cousin for the first time. (Because Charlene has a daughter, and thus far, Robin has only had Edward and Arthur for her cousins.)

Danidair - Danidair is a name I made up that means clever in a language I made up, so his (very original Fairy Godmother) gave him cleverness as his gift. Beyond that, I can't say anything, since he won't even be born until book 17.

Odette - She's in the realm of "this book's so far off, that it doesn't have a number yet," but her story is actually completely plotted, and it's kinda sad. I have a brilliant twist for (a) her prince and (b) how her curse works. And Doranna's involved, so that will be awesome.

Auralina - Aura is even further out than Odette, but she's also fairly well plotted. She's the Little Mermaid character and is the princess of Atlantis, but I've opted to go with a less traditional approach to things.

Wanda - She's Odette's aunt, and is leftover from a fanfiction sequel my friends and I wrote for Barbie of Swan Lake. Wanda, as her name suggests, is a wanderer. She also is a friend of Doranna's.

The Snow Queen - She's coming. She's deadly. She's dangerous.

All right, so I hope I've whetted your appetite enough that you'll be willing to hear that I'm going to focus on Bookania publications next year instead of Rizkaland stuff. If not, swing over to Anna's blog for an interview with Maryanne, and maybe that'll pique your interest even more.

And Free books!
