Overhaul Winner!!!!!

And, here it is, the day that all of you have been waiting for, the day that you guys get to learn which of you lovely folk will have six shiny new books on their bookshelf.

Six shiny new books with six shiny covers.

I had no fewer than 631 entries for that giveaway, spread across 45 people. Two thirds of those entries, however, belonged to only three people - Sarah Taleweaver, Brie Donning, and Erudessa Aranduriel.

So it should be no surprise to anyone that it was one of those three.

But who was it?

*drumroll please....*

Erudessa Aranduriel

And now the rest of you can go home. I'll be shipping your package sometime in December. And, unless you've moved and I don't know about it, I already have your address from the last giveaway.

I'm going back to NaNo, now.

Oh, and for the rest of you - just thought I'd point out that my books are going to be in the Black Friday Sale, and all of you will have opportunity to pick up the lovely new editions for amazing prices - and I'm offering all of my books with Free Shipping this year!

Game - Guess the Snippet

So, as all of you know, I'm holding a giveaway in honor of my eighth blogoversary and the rerelease of all my covers, and I thought that I might toss in a few games.

Today's is Guess the Snippet, and, yes, it will be open until September 31st. To play, all you have to do is email me with your guesses. Each correct answer is worth a point.

And, yes, you have to email me. Any guesses posted in the comments will be deleted and not counted. You are welcome to discuss and speculate in the comments, though.

And, just to make things difficult, all names are changed to be one of the following:

Maryanne
Petra
Lucy
Eric
William
Richard

But, to make things a bit simpler, the books that I pulled from are all from this list:

Love and Memory
Red as Snow
ROCKS
It's Sci-Fi, People!
The Nine Gems of Virtue
Do You Take This Quest?
The Quest for the Quince
The Worth of a King
Dragon Song
The Seven Drawers

1.
“There you are!”
Petra didn't even have time to brace herself for her mother's hug as she stepped into the common room. Sure, they'd seen each other just a few months before, for their birthday, but that was her enthusiastic mother.
“Hi, mom, Good to see you too,” she muttered, returning the hug. “And hi, dad.”
“Where's your enthusiasm, sweetheart?” asked Dad, as her mother pulled away. “Do I need to have a word with the instructor about your misplacing it?”
“You might,” said Petra. “But my enthusiasm is easily misplaced, and I don't think it was their fault.”
“Mom, Dad!” cried Richard, bursting into the room. “You're here!”
“And your brother more than makes up for your lack of enthusiasm,” said Dad.

2.
“It is often speculated that she poisoned him,” Maryanne mentioned, as she opened the book.
“Indeed, you’ve mentioned that fact before,” said William, cracking open his own book, a massive tome of law. He glanced up with a raised eyebrow. “Should I be worried for my own life?”
She shook her head playfully. “If I killed you, who would handle the politics? I’m in charge of history, you have law. Remember?”
William gave a laugh. “Ah, good, then I shall sleep easy at night knowing that I am so essential to you.”
Maryanne shrugged. “I hate politics.”
From behind her, there was a sharp gasp and then a giggle.

3.
Or perhaps…
She swallowed, willing herself to be calm. “Eric,” she said, “do with me as you will. Just … just don’t…” She let a shudder run through her, thankful for the knife-fueled fear that made it believable. “Don’t kiss me,” she finished, in an inaudible whisper.
He drew back, though the knife was still pointed towards her. “Kiss you? What put a thought like that into your head?”
“You have me here, at your mercy,” Lucy whispered. “Kill me if you must, but just don’t … I’m a pure, virtuous maiden. Don’t defile me.”
She closed her eyes, hoping, praying. Such reverse psychology worked for Bre’r Rabbit. But, even if it did work for her, would the kiss be enough to save her? To save him?
He gave a slow chuckle as he lowered the knife. “You are a pretty thing. I’ll admit that such thoughts have passed through my , would the kiss be ecology worked for Bre'mind from time to time. Yes, that would be a fittingly terrible fate for you.”

4.
“Just about,” Maryanne answered. “One moment.” Lucy felt one last poke as the final pin slid into place. “There we go. Run along with you – and, Eric, make sure you take care of her – and behave yourselves. You may be marrying tomorrow, but that’s tomorrow and not today.”
“Noted,” said Eric, standing and offering his arm to Lucy. She took it wordlessly. “Now let us get out of here before someone notices us and insists on giving us a chaperone.”
At the door, however, he paused, and Lucy realized that his finger was on her pulse. “Why, Lucy, your heart is racing.”
She ducked her head as her cheeks grew warm. With her darker complexion, blushing wasn’t as obvious as it was on the constantly-red Maryanne, but he was staring at her very intently.
He gave a low chuckle. “Interesting.”

5.
She got the sensation that someone was watching her. Looking up, she saw, just down the hall, a young man, a servant by his garb, but one that was clearly high-ranking. Her breath caught as she recognized him.
“Richard,” she breathed, hastily gaining her feet.
His eyes went wide, and for a moment, her heart faltered as she thought that she’d been mistaken. But he shook his head. “Milady, I … I’m sorry … I…”
It was him.
For a moment, they both just stood there, staring at each other, neither daring to say anything that might ruin the moment. It was so tempting to just rush into his arms, let him hold her, and then rush away never to be seen by any of her family again. To get away from her duties and rules.
It was only her duty and those rules that kept her rooted in place.
“I’m sorry,” he finally repeated. “I … I didn’t realize that anyone was in this hall, and when I saw you there … are you all right?”
Petra lifted her chin. “Of course I am.”

6.
Lucy had just picked up the hotel telephone to call home (because far be it from Eric to be at his own house when he could be at hers, especially when they had guests) when Maryanne slunk into the room.
“Who are you calling?” the girl asked, in that annoying tone of hers.
Lucy set the phone down and closed her eyes. “I was hoping for a few minutes where I could be left to myself.”
“With a phone,” said Maryanne, plopping down on the bed next to Lucy. “You’re not alone when you have a phone. Were you calling home to complain about how terrible we are? Oh, come on, Petra, that’s no way to talk about your hosts. After all the trouble we’re going through to make sure you’re having a fun time…”
“I promised I’d call home and tell them everything that’s happening,” Lucy answered. “Honestly, I’m having fun, and I appreciate you letting me come with you. I’m not calling to complain by any means.”
“Sixteen and your parents still expect you to check in with them?” asked Maryanne. “Don’t they trust us to take care of you? We told them we would.”
“I’m not calling my parents,” said Lucy. “They trust me to take care of myself.”
“Then who are you calling?” asked Maryanne. “You said you were calling home.”

7.
“You're a long way from home now, aren't you Lucy?” Petra asked, as she entered the main quarters.
Lucy glanced up, something akin to a smile pulling at one side of her mouth. “Yeah, I guess you can say that. I'm never going to see home again. Never going to see my family again. It's the least of my problems.”
“I'd hate to never see my family again,” said Petra, shaking her head. “In fact, it's possibly my worst fear. That I'll never see them again. It's possible, you know, when you're always traveling. The universe is a big place.”
“Just this part of it is big enough,” said Lucy.
“It is, isn't it?” Petra agreed. “But are you sure you won't miss your family?”
Lucy shook her head. “We were your typical royal family. No one ever paid attention to anyone else.”
“And you ignored everyone else, too? Right with the rest of them?”
She shrugged. “No, I tried to be nice to my younger brother – the only one younger than me that I could be nice to. I guess I do miss him. Pity I couldn't bring him with me. He didn't have anyone else to pay attention to him. And he didn't have a future painted out for him like the rest of us did.”
Petra shook her head. “Oh, I guess I do pity him. I hate it when my future isn't painted out for me. Too uncertain.”

Author Interview - Amanda Tero

I was supposed to post this this morning. I completely forgot to schedule it last night, and then today was spent Christmas shopping, then I got home to find that my computer refused to turn on. So I had to wait until my mom went to bed so that I could borrow her computer.

!!!!!!

What is it with my devices dying in December? I'd really like to know.

I need to get myself a new job, but I don't want one. Can everyone just go and buy my books instead? Pretty please?

Anywho, I'm interviewing Amanda Tero, a historical fiction author. I've not read any of her books, but she seems like a sweet girl, and I do have today's featured book waiting for me on my kindle.

1. Can you tell me a bit about your book, Journey to Love, and why people need to read it?
Journey to Love is about orphan, Marie, who is sent out west on the orphan train (true historical event). Because of the circumstances in her life, her heart has become hardened so that she doesn't accept that God is love. However, the love of those she meets in her new life cracks the shell of her heart.
One of the main lessons that Marie learns is how a relationship with Christ is different than just following all of the rules of religion. This, to me, is something very important I'd love for readers to learn from reading the book.

2. JtL is set at the turn of the century. What led you to write about this era?
Well, when I get a story idea, I always try to pin-point an idea. Seeing that the Orphan Train was an organism from 1854-1929, I had my timeline limited a little. And, in thinking of Marie's story, it just fit turn-of-the-century. :)

3. What are some of your other favorite historical eras?
Ah! I would have to say that the medieval era currently has me enthralled. But then, as I've been researching the American Civil War, that, too, is gripping me. ;) It's almost safe to say that I love a variety of historical eras. The 1800's may come close to my long-standing favorite.

4. Do you have any advice for anyone interested in writing historical fiction?
Be sure you know your facts! Don't assume, researching. And yes, researching is tough, but it pays off. I like to use the college-standard in that you have to information from at least two different sources before you can trust it. Some of the best books I've found for general historical research is The Writers' Digest books, "Everyday Life in..." These do have all details, though, and are not conservative, so I'd caution younger readers in just grabbing one and flipping through it (some of them have no questionable content -- like the Civil War one -- while others -- like, "Everyday Life in the 1800's" -- has some things that probably shouldn't be read by children under 16).

5. Do you know your MBTI personality type? If so, how would you say it affects your writing?
Well, considering I'm not familiar with MBTI, I just took a test and apparently I'm something like an ISTJ.

I can answer this question based on my personality how I know it, not necessarily related to MBTI. For example, I'm more of a deep-thinker, insensitive, critical, logical, type of person. I'm not a big dreamer. That being said, my writing tends to focus more on the internal character rather than description. Though some people have told me that Journey to Love made them cry, I don't usually get emotionally involved with my characters. When I see a bad review on something I've written, I actually enjoy reading what the reader had to say; sometimes, it shows me my weaknesses in writing, where I can improve. Because I'm not a dreamer, I have to work a little harder on coming up with bizarre and amazing plots. ;) And, also in the mix, when it comes to describing things, I have found that I do best when I look at a picture then word-paint what I see. So, my personality definitely has its strengths and weaknesses that it lends to writing, but as I write, I'm learning and figuring out how to balance it. :)

About the Author
Amanda Tero is a homeschool graduate who desires to provide God-honoring, family-friendly reading material. She has enjoyed writing since before ten years old, but it has only been since 2013 that she began seriously pursuing writing again – starting with some short stories that she wrote for her sisters as a gift. Her mom encouraged her to try selling the stories she published, and since then, she has begun actively writing short stories, novellas, and novels. If something she has written draws an individual into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ, it is worth it!

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5)

I predict ...

All right, first of all, I've passed 50,000 on Saturday, and I finished part 2 on Sunday. That means that my bar on the sidebar has changed color again! Now it's dark blue. I was going to go with silver, for The Mountain, but then I decided I didn't like it, so I went with dark blue instead. I like it.

At my current typing rate, I should finish NaNo by the twenty-first, but since I've hit the part of the book where have the clearer road map (i.e. the notebook version was better written) I should be speeding up. Today, I get to write the scene where Clara and Andrew meet, and I seriously can't wait.

Now, onto the topic of my post.

As ya'll know, I'm going to be publishing the third book of my Bookanias in February. At the moment, I think I'm going to hold the cover reveal on the 31st of December, though I haven't talked to my cover artist about that deadline. (And I still need to send her the back cover blurb.) If you're interested in showing off my cover on your blog that day, email me at kendraeardnek@gmail.com, and I'll add you to my list.

But I was thinking that it was about time to hold something of a contest. A predictions contest.

I've posted a lot of hints round and about my blog and the rest of the internet about what's going to happen in this book. Now, I want to hear what you think is going to happen, or what you want to happen, that sort of stuff. You can make a list on your blog, or if you don't have a blog, you may post your predictions in the comments section.

For every prediction you get right (or close to right, I'm generous) I'll enter a point for you into a contest to win a free paperback version of Kingdom. If you predict something that will happen in the series, though not in this book, you get half a point. If you post an idea I think is really good, and I decide to use it, you also get half a point. (And also a mention in the acknowledgement of the specific book)

For an example so you guys have an idea of what I'm talking about, I'm going to post a list of predictions for a book I've been really looking forward to: King's Scrolls by Jaye L. Knight, book two of her Ilyon Chronicles. (Partially because the cover reveal is this Friday, and it's gorgeous.)

1. Kyrin and Jace will grow closer. I happen to know already that they are a potential couple (and their first kiss is in book 3!), but I expect to see some depth added to their relationship in this book.
2. Kaden will ride a dragon. I mean, there are going to be dragons in this book and Kaden, so if Kaden doesn't get to ride one, I (and he, I'm sure) will be terribly disappointed.
3. Epic worldbuilding, especially into the society of the Cretes. In book one, most of the focus was on the humans, with some appearances from the Talcins, but we have Cretes in this book, and from what I can tell, they're most of the focus, so yeah. I'm eager to learn about their society.
4. Jace will struggle with the soul issue. I think that this will be something he faces throughout the series, especially since there wasn't enough closure for it in book one. I expect to see at least one relapse for them.
5. A dungeon escape. Not much of a prediction here, since Jaye let slip on facebook that every book except either four or five (don't remember which, exactly) has one. So I'm going to take a step further and say that Jace will be the one in prison. Reason? He's one of the few characters who didn't end up there in book one. I expect that this may be where we see his soul struggle.

You get the idea.

Also, I'll also like to remind ya'll that anyone who has read and reviewed both Sew and Take is eligible to beta read Kingdom. So if you have, feel free to contact me (email above) and let me know that you want to read it. I'll be sending it out in December, after I give it one last comb over. Feedback will be needed before January 20th.

Have fun!

2. How does Robin fetch the Attention of People?
3. What be Nixa's element?

And Now the Post You've Been Waiting For!

You know, Kendra's a dear and all that, but sometimes she puts off doing things she should for far too long (case in point - writing my book). She was supposed to tell all of you who won the giveaways five weeks ago, but here we are ... anyways.

Oh, and Kendra just told me not to use numbers.

Yeah, she has trouble with numbers, I have trouble focusing on what I need to get done. We all have our faults.

First off all, winner of the first $5 gift card from the interviews is ... Abbey! I'll need an email from you from an address attached to an Amazon account so I can send you the money.

Second, well, no one entered any official fanfiction, so I'm going to shift that one's prize over to the review giveaway. (and also because my brain forgot which contest had which prize). Therefore, Kiri Liz will be receiving a complete physical collection of my books. Not autographed, unfortunately, because I will be sending them to you directly from CreateSpace. However, when we have that LotR marathon (because it has to happen), I'll be sure to sign them for you. In the meantime, email me your mailing address, and I'll ship them off to you.

Winner of the Title contest is, by popular demand, Kathryn. She won by one vote. I'll need a email with an amazon attached so she can claim her $10.

As for the fan art, well no one entered any of the traditional sort, and certainly no hand-drawn stuff. However, Kiri Liz did submit some mock covers into the graphic art contest, and her Cayra has won her a $5 gift card. I have her amazon-attached email, so I'll send it to her at once.

Now that we're done with all of the giveaways that involve money, I get the keyboard. Each day, Kendra featured a game that promised one person a chance to read a sneak peek at something of her writing.

The first day, it was tag, for a chance to read Infiltration. The winner? Robyn Hoode. Lucky you. That's one good book there. (In other words, it's finished.)

Day three, it was Egg Toss to win a chance to read the openings of the first three books of the Rizkaland Legends. Winner? Kiri Liz.

No one played Red Rover on day seven, so no one gets to read The Nine Gems of Virtue. Now that's unfortunate, because it's a good book!

Stop with the numbers.

What?

You're giving them the numbers out of order. Just say the game and the prize. Don't bother with the numbers.

Okay, fine. Days are hard to count, anyways, being insubstantial and all that.

Moving on. Since she played Hot Potato so well, Kathryn will get to read The New Division. So far, your the first person who Kendra doesn't already have an email for, so shoot her one, and she'll send you this lovely story. (You can find her email on her FAQ page.)

The person who kept the balloon in the air and didn't pop it and will therefore get to read Cayra and Just another Sci-fi Novel, is TomWildRose. Kendra says she does have an email for you. Just a warning though, the Sci-fi Novel contains references to Doctor Who, and since ...

Maryanne, Tom is, I believe, a fan of Doctor Who (the classic series, at least). She won't mind references. Now get off your high horse about that show.

She has issues with it because the Doctor isn't a medical kind of doctor. Now get her on Merlin ... but we won't go there. Carry on, Maryanne.

Is é an Dochtúir falsa, ní cosúil le mo dheartháir. Anois, tá sé an dochtúir is fearr sa domhan.

Moving on again, the person who pinned the tails on the donkeys and gets to read Colinda and the Swan Secret is Miss Melody. Except that Kendra just informed me that you already have that story in your inbox somewhere (apparently, you won it at her birthday party) and that she hasn't added anything to it since that time, so you'll get to read The Nine Gems of Virtue instead. I'm sure you'll be happy with that one.

Because she was such a good scavenger, Jessy Jones will get to read Half-Hidden. That means you'll get to read about Stardrana. Ah, but she's a sweetheart. Of course, this was written at a stage where Kendra wasn't sure if Stardrana would know exactly what the Hidden were, but anyways. I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

Robyn Hoode was the only one who has done her Character Encounter this month, so she'll get to read the first ten chapters of Worth of a King. (With all of Jack's and my notes edited out of course ;) Don't want you reading spoilers or anything like that ...)

Robyn Hoode also was the one to burst open the pinata (figuratively speaking) so she'll also get to read HaV Academy.

There was no game for the Ankulen's day. I think Kendra forgot about it, or simply couldn't come up with anything.

And finally, the only person to have taken a pitch with the horseshoes was Robyn Hoode (those were some great Haikus - worth of Haiku himself.) Since I happen to know that she's already read the first two books of the Bookania series, she'll just be getting Kingdom. She'll love it, that's for certain.

And now that that's done ...

It's not.

Yes, it is. We've given away everything I promised.

Ah, but I promised a dragon's egg.

Maryanne, there is no possible way for me to give away a dragon's egg.

And the winner of the dragon's egg is ...

Maryanne ...

Hush. And the winner is ...

Kendra E. Ardnek!

Via Pinterest
I heard you mention the other day that you would love to be a dragon rider, so I went and got you an egg. A purple egg, so you can name it Sunrise, just like you want to!

And a big thank-you to everyone who attended the party! It wouldn't have been half as fun without you!

Maryanne ... there are days ...

Character Encounters - May 2014

May's here with all of its flowers! Next month we get pilgrims!

Anyways, you're not here to talk about pilgrims. We're here to talk about where you'll meet your next character (who may or may not be a pilgrim - probably won't be, though).

Since I have a really nice giveaway that I'm also revealing in this post, I'll be short and sweet and cut to the chase.

The Attic

May is the last month of Spring, and therefore the last month of spring cleaning. And what room needs spring cleaning more than the attic? Of course, if you're like me, and you don't have a attic, the roof is a viable option. You don't have to be on the roof, but you know how characters are.

Okay, and now to tell you about the giveaway. As most of you know, I released The Ankulen back in September, about eight months ago now. But I'd like you to click through to this link. Now click through to this one. Notice anything interesting? The Ankulen doesn't have any reviews.

And the closest thing to a blog review that it has gotten has been what Jack wrote with her post in the cover reveal.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The presence of reviews is what sells books, especially reviews from people that the potential buyer trusts. Everyone who has read the book has told me that they loved it, but no one has told the world how much they loved it.

Is it really that much to ask you to write a review?

I don't want to stoop to the level of buying reviews (though the thought has crossed my mind) but I'm getting desperate. I've contacted a few people about reviewing it, and some of them have agreed to - but like myself, have a massive TBR list, and haven't gotten to it yet.

So, the other day I had an idea. Not exactly buying reviews, but I'm going to give you some incentive.

I'm going to host a giveaway. Entry - review The Ankulen. Every place you post a review (Amazon, Goodreads, Shelfari) is worth an entry. If you post a review on your blog, it's worth a entry. If your blog review mentions this giveaway asking for others to review this book, you get an extra entry. (Although, if your blog is dedicated to reviews, I ask that you don't mention it. Just share the fact that there's a giveaway on all your social feeds and I'll give you that extra point.

The prize? A $5 Amazon Gift Card. However. if I can get to twenty reviews by unique people, I'll make it two $5 cards. If I can get to thirty, there will be three cards. Forty reviews, and I'll give away 4 cards. Fifty reviews, and I'll add a $10 card. If I get to sixty, I'll toss in a surprise. Each card will go to a unique winner.

The deadline for this giveaway? The end of May. Sure, I know that fifty or sixty reviews is a pie in the sky number, but I have faith in you my readers. I know that a good number of you have read it already - you need only to actually sit down and write the review. I know that another good number of you already own it, and you only need to read it (and write the review). And for those of you who don't already own it - it will be free on kindle from the sixth through to the tenth (so if you post a blog review before or during the free spree, do mention this fact!)

I'm not asking for five star reviews (unless, of course, you feel like it deserves one). I'm asking for honest reviews that will tell potential buyers what the book is about, confess the bad with the good, and tell them why they should shell out their hard-earned money to buy it.

Also I do ask that you send me an email or comment on my blog somewhere with a list of everywhere you posted your review. Sure, I'll keep on eye on them, but I don't want to give the prize to someone who doesn't know about the contest (how awkward would that be?) so I need confirmation that your review is an entry to the giveaway.

Thank-you in advance, and may the odds be ever in your favor.
