My Fall Reading List

Also, first off, if you look at my pages tab, you might notice a new one - Cover Reveal Sign-up. This is me trying to be professional and all that. But, anyways, click it and fill it out, and you'll get to participate in my cover reveal for book 3 on the 31st.

Since ya'll asked for me to share more about my reading, I shall comply. I actually did a good job of reading this fall (Until NaNo took over my brain) so I have a respectable list (Unlike what I did for summer, which was all of eight.)

I had had my eye on this one for a while (partially because Callie is the name of one of my own characters), and I'd finally seen it free on Kindle, so had snatched it up. It was good. I enjoyed it, though the writing style was more juvenile that I like to read.

I bought this one, knowing that the author was good, and since I'm supposed to be studying this era in school, decided to go ahead and start reading. In short, I loved it, more than the author's previous books, which I hadn't really thought possible. It's a chapter of the war that I've only before seen handled by Liberty's Kids, so I appreciated this Christian view of the story.

This book had been sitting on my kindle at about 10 to 20 percent for the last two years, when I finally decided to pick it up and actually read it. Once the three story lines converged and I found out what the book was about, I couldn't put it down. It's on my list of all-time favorite Christian Fantasy. Very well done.

This was a Cinderella retelling. It wasn't bad ... but doesn't stand out, either, and the ending was slightly confusing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It rambled in places, and sometimes didn't seem to have a plot, but I loved the worldbuilding, and the characters, and it twisted really well. Also, the jewelry-making. I really enjoyed reading about that.

I glanced at my shelf one day and noticed a Boxcar Children that I hadn't read yet, so I rectified that problem. I enjoyed it - but it was the Aldens, what can I say? They're great kids to read about.

I found out that my library had just purchased this series, so I brought home the next two books. It was very different from the first book, despite following much of the same timeline. I loved the worldbuilding. Rose Red was a great character.

Our library also acquired this series, so I was eager to finish it. This was a very fitting ending to the series. Again, wonderful worldbuilding, and OH!!! Vrell and Achan. Those two were just so frustrating and endearing at the same time.

After reading and enjoying Cinder last year, I decided to pick up and read the next one. (More like, I found the next one on the shelf, it's one of the ones that stays out of the library) While Red Riding Hood isn't my favorite tale, and I'll admit that I had my misgivings at first, I did like how Meyer worked it in. But I wanted more Cinder. She's just fascinating. But I tolerated Scarlet.

Did I mention the world building on Veiled Rose, but let me say it again - WORLD BUILDING!!! We actually plunged into the Goldstone Woods in this one. Rose Red was once more amazing. The poor little girl!

And then I decided to find some books about male MC's by male authors as study for Water Princess, Fire Prince. I got this book. It was amazing. Read it. You'll never trust your local library again. (Which was a pretty bold move for an author, I'll just put that out there)

I love Egyptian mythology, I loved the Percy Jackson books. So I knew this was one I didn't want to miss. Except that I've left it on the shelf since ... uh, when did it come out? Well, I read it this year. I enjoyed it. Maybe not as much as the Percies, but it was still pretty good. I thoroughly plan to read the sequels as well.

This is my new favorite retelling of Rumplestiltskin. It hit all the bases for me: completely original yet followed the actual fairy tale almost exactly, and it had other fairy tales make decided entries, including a lesser known Rumplestiltskin-esque tale known as the three spinners (if I remember right. I could go look, but I don't feel like it.)

And then I've read My Kingdom for a Quest (Cover pending). It was pretty good, though there were quite a few errors that I had to mark for the author's attention. Wait ... I'm the author, um ...

I'm currently in the middle of Starflower, Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo, and Plenilune at the moment, as well as a second, more thorough reading of Kingdom.. Good books, those four.

    2. Yeah, with all the craziness with my blog this summer, we finally switched hosting companies, so my blog email was down there for a bit. It appears to be back up and running now, so either jenelle@jenelleschmidt or jenelle.l.schmidt@gmail should work just fine (they'll both come to the same inbox either way). So excited!

And, I know what it's like to have to wait on cover art :)

I'm curious to know what you think of Plenilune. I have heard wonderful things about it.

    1. I think you'd really enjoy some of those. I stumbled upon some gems, that's for certain.

As for Plenilune, I'm sitting at about 20% if I remember right, but had to wander away for editing reasons. (Since I'm reading on my kindle, and that happens to be where I'm editing as well) So far, it's been pretty good. I've no idea where it's going but I'm ... restraining myself from skipping ahead. The writing is beautiful, that's for certain.
