Q&A with Julie C. Gilbert

I have Julie C. Gilbert here today to answer any questions you might have about writing, her writing, her writing process, or any other questions you might have for her!

Julie writes Christian mysteries and science fiction. I've not read any of her books yet, but they sound interesting, and she's a very sweet lady.

    1. Hey, thanks for stopping by. I'm a huge Star Wars fans. The last few that I read twice are: New Jedi Order Edge of Victory I: Conquest and Star Wars New Jedi Order Rebel Dream.
As for non-Star Wars books, I enjoyed Ender's Game.

  2. Hi, Julie!
I have a question: what advice would you give to someone who wants to start writing mysteries but doesn't know where to begin? What are some mystery- writing tips you wish you'd known when you got started?
    Thanks!

    1. Hey Sarah, thanks for the question. I guess I'd ask you what draws you to mysteries? Once you can define that to yourself, you should have a decent idea of what you want in your story.

Other than that, I'd say start with an extensive outline. That will let you know the twists and turns you intend to put into the story. I outline by writing down everything I think would be cool to put in the story...then I beat those into chapter titles/summaries.

What kind of mystery? If it's a murder mystery, you need to know who's gonna die, who going to kill them, how they're going to die/do the killing, where/when the killing happens, and why (motive). You can do a similar outline for any type of mystery. (Who, what, where, when, why)
